After years of nagging by transparency advocates, New York City quietly released its trove of tax lot records. The dataset, called the Property Land Use Tax lot Output (or PLUTO), is a detailed tract of every piece of property in the city. The coveted data was behind a restrictive city paywall until the efforts the NYC Transparency Working Group and other agitators pushed the city to open its data vaults. Now some of NYC's best mappers are seizing on this opportunity.
