Much of California's southern Bay Area is known for expensive real estate, tech companies, and aerospace engineers ? what's not usually talked about is its salt content. Yet the salt industry has been an active part of the area for over a century. As one flies into the San Francisco airport, evidence of it appears as a richly colored quilt of briny pools in acid green, ochre, and toxic-looking reds.
